2017 Southern Oklahoma Merit Badge Fair
Greetings from Wisiwanik Lodge 190!
We are pleased to invite you to our first ever lodge sponsored merit badge fair. It will be held at East Central University in Ada on Saturday, April 22 from 9 to 5:30. At the fair scouts will have an opportunity to earn up to 3 merit badges. Only 3 of the badges (Aviation, Salesmanship and Scouting Heritage) will have requirements to do before or after the fair. And those requirements are easy and may have been done already!!
Please see the attachments for a flyer, registration form and the requirements for each of the badges that will be offered. We will try to keep scouts from the same troop wanting the same badge(s) together as much as we can.
We tried to stay away from offering merit badges required for Eagle. This is because many scout troops work on them in their meetings and because many of them are impossible to finish in the time we have. All merit badge instructors will be at least 18 years old. This is so that arrowmen under 18 can earn, not counsel, merit badges.
For those scouts attending their first merit badge fair or earning their first merit badges we suggest these badges:
Citizenship in the Nation, Fingerprinting, Painting or Sculpture. Even though other merit badges may look like more “fun” to younger scouts they will be much harder for them to complete and they will be struggling to keep up with the more experienced scouts. Please put your younger scouts in three of the four merit badges recommended for them.
The following merit badges are reserved for those scouts 13 years of age and above:
American Labor, Composite Materials and Farm Mechanics. We tried to offer some merit badges that few will have and hope we have succeeded. We hope to offer these again in the future.
Leaders/Parents are not required to be at the merit badge fair the whole time, but should be close by and available by phone in case there are any problems. We will need at least one leader besides the merit badge instructor in each merit badge session and the more there the better! This will ensure that we meet the Youth Protection requirements and have extra sets of hands, eyes and ears to help the scouts do what they need to do. We will see what we can come up with for leaders and parents. Any suggestions?
Please contact Pat Fountain at [Click for member's page] or at 580 320 5511 if you have any questions about the merit badge fair.
Those (scouts and adults) who pay their 2017 Wisawanik Lodge Order of the Arrow dues at this event will receive $5 off their dues and will only need to pay $5 for the year. Those who attend the merit badge fair and have already paid their dues for 2017 will receive a $5 credit towards any one lodge event held the rest of 2017.
Thanks and we hope to see you on April 22.
